The Difference Between Infertility vs Fertility

Have you ever heard the phrase, “airing of the grievances”?  The first place I heard it was from some friends who heard in on an episode of Seinfeld.  This blog shall be a (small) airing of the grievances for me!

There are few words that really rub me the wrong way.  One word is “healer”.  In my opinion that word should be saved for whomever/whatever you pray to at night and not some health care practitioner you see on a Tuesday afternoon.  This person may help you feel better, but honestly that’s because they are using their tools (whatever those tools may be) to give your body a nudge in the right direction.  Always remember it is your body that is doing the hard work!

Another word that really “gets my goat” is the word “infertile”.  People come to me and tell me their sad story about how they are infertile or have been slapped with the devastating label of “unexplained infertility”. Umm, excuse me? Did your reproductive parts fall out somewhere along the way? You may be having troubles with your fertility but it is not the same as being infertile!

Lets first take a look at this starting with the true definition of these words from the good people at Merriam-Webster:

Definition of FERTILITY

1: the quality or state of being fertile

Definition of INFERTILITY

1: not fertile or productive

2: incapable of or unsuccessful in achieving pregnancy

I could probably stop this blog right here, but I’m not going to!  To me, the word “infertile” might as well be a 4 letter word (ok, 11 letter word).  I cannot stress this point enough, if you are out there and you are trying to conceive a baby, stop thinking in terms of being “infertile” otherwise I can almost promise you, it’ll never happen!  Unless you are missing some major parts, you are probably not infertile!  I tell my fertility and cancer patients all the time, “make up your mind and your body will follow.”

The fact that you are having difficulties with your fertility may be out of your control but the refusing the label of “infertile” isn’t!  Press forward, try new things, seek help where you may not have looked before!  IUI, IVF, ART, Acupuncture, Adoption…there are plenty of options in the land of baby-making so take a deep breath, make your choice of fertile or infertile, and (hopefully) I’ll see you on the baby side!
